San Jose junipers are an extremely versatile conifer tree that can easily be used as a low border, groundcover, or container plant. Their stiff, irregular branches with attractive, scaled, sage green foliage make this an excellent choice for bonsai. Suitable for upright, cascade, semi-cascade styles.

Native to East Asia. Prostrate, the dense, dark sage green with both needle and scale foliage that is soft to the touch. It is a slow-going tree. This juniper is notable for its striking foliage and beautiful bark.

Junipers prefer soil that is slightly dry, but it should not be exposed to prolonged dryness. It is best to water the plant well, allowing for proper drainage, and then allow the soil to become dry before watering again. The juniper bonsai tree needs a certain level of humidity for optimal growth.

This plant tolerates a variety of conditions such as drought, many types of pH values and soil including clay and rocky soil, but prefers a medium, well-drained soil. It grows best in a sunny location but can take partial shade.  It is resistant to damage from deer, salt, and air pollution while effective in erosion control.
