The Rocky Mountain juniper is a species of juniper native to western North America, from southwest Canada to the Great Plains of the United States. The Rocky Mountain Juniper is a small evergreen conifer reaching heights of 15–50 feet (5–15 meters) and a trunk up to 3 ft (1 meter) in diameter.
Juniper bonsai come in a couple of different forms; running junipers and mounding junipers. The Rocky Mountain Juniper is a running juniper. The growth will extend or grow whips before it will form a denser mounding growth at the base of the whip.
Many bonsai artists consider the Rocky Mountain Juniper the highest quality bonsai species in North American. It does, however, require more technical skills to work with the tree’s fine foliage.
