The Satsuki azalea is one of the most sought after and satisfying of all bonsai subjects. Its popularity stems from a prolific number of gorgeous flowers when it’s in full bloom. While native to Japan it can now be found in countries worldwide.
Satsuki azaleas display a wide variety of flower colors and sizes. Less hardy than most Azaleas, Satsuki have an excellent low, twiggy habit and bear funnel shaped, unscented flowers in whites, pinks, reds, and purples in Summer (not Spring as is typical with many Rhododendron species).
The term Satsuki is in reference to the Asian lunar calendar to the fifth month (between May 21 and June 21). The Japanese gave it that name due to the beautiful flowers that appear during that time.
Owning a Satsuki is an awesome experience. It does, however, require daily care. Here are the top five things to keep your Satsuki healthy.
1. Water more frequently. Satsuki’s produce fine roots that don’t respond well to drying out.
2. Remove flowers after blooming.
3. Remove any unnecessary growth.
4. Postpone work until your tree is growing well.
5. Watch out for insects and signs of fungus.
The perfect bonsai tree for someone looking to add color to their collection. Available for local pick-up (contact for personal delivery option).
